Il sistema immunitario di Stefania Artigiani (stefania.artigiani@libero.it), Annalisa Balanzoni (a.balanzoni@virgilio.it), Alessandra Bosia (ventiene@libero.it)

LESSON PLAN: The Immune System

DURATION OF TEACHING UNIT: 6 periods (50 minutes/period)

GRADE LEVEL: (14 – 18) High school teacher

SUBJECT AREA: Biology, Health Education

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Knowledge
After the lessons, students should be able:
- to describe cells, tissues and organs of the immune system
- to distinguish between active and passive immunity
- to identify effectors and mechanisms of the innate/adaptive immunity
- to identify effectors and mechanisms of the humoral/ cell-mediated immunity
Comprehension
Students should understand:
- anatomic and functional complexity of an organism
- mechanisms of communication among cells and between cells and tissues
- importance of prevention and treatment
- which mechanisms come into action knowing which pathogen is involved
Skills
After the lessons, students should develop the following skills:
- Communication: they should be able to use appropriate scientific terms
- Search information about immune system on the Internet and on books
Personal and Social Values/Attitudes
After the lessons, students should be able to develop the following values and attitudes:
- respect of their own body
- greater respect for the environment and greater care for the hygiene of their body

PREREQUISITES
- cell structure and function
- prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell
- cellular morphology and phisiology
- DNA replication, transcription, translation
- the definition of “molecule”
- mechanism of cell communication and adhesion
