We hope the other teachers will find this outline of Anglo-Saxon Britain useful for their students.
In order to understand if this unit has been or will be interesting and useful teachers may want to answer the following questionnaire:
Literature
Do you think it is important for your students to know something about Anglo-Saxon literature? Why?
Do you think your students could be motivated in approaching Beowulf or not? Why?
Do you believe Anglo-Saxon values are still alive in Anglo-Saxon countries? If no, what kind of differences do you find?
Do you believe your students will understand Beowulf's values or not?
Do you think that using a film when doing literature can be helpful? Eventually list the reasons for and against and then decide if you are going to use a film or not.
Language
- How do you think to introduce the topic of language families? (you might like to start from your own language, for example)
- What are the main features of Indoeuropean?
- Do you think a modern English speaker can easily read an untranslated Old English text? Why?
- What do Grimm's and Verner's laws account for?
History:
1) Do you think that giving some hints of Anglo-Saxon history may be useful to introduce Old English language and literature.
2) Can you find some links between Anglo-Saxon literary works and their history, culture,values and social customs?
3) Do you think knowing some aspects of early-medieval England may help your student to understand better the cultural and linguistic issues of modern England?
4) Compare Roman Britannia to Anglo Saxon Britain and to Norman Britain, extract the main differences and explain it to your students.
Civilization
- Do you think it is relevant at all teaching the cultural aspects of the Anglo-Saxon period?
- According to you, is starting to talk about Anglo-Saxon culture a good way to introduce also literary and linguistic topics and make students more interested?
- Do you think that, knowing the main aspects of Anglo-Saxon culture, students will be able to understand more also contemporary British social culture?
- In your opinion, would making comparisons between Anglo-Saxon culture and the your own country culture of the same period be useful to get students more involved?
