Introduction

This teaching unit is part of a more complete project to introduce students to the differences and the cultural aspects of several English-speaking countries. This unit is focused on Australia, on its geographical and economical features, its historical background and its socio-cultural aspects.

Class: third year of a secondary school

Level: intermediate (fully B1, according to the Common European Framework for Reference in Languages)

Pre-requisites:

  • simple past and present perfect
  • passive
  • general knowledge of terms related to history and geography
  • habit to work in groups

Objectives: at the end of this unit students should be able to

  • know geographical, historical and economical details of the country
  • search information in the text in order to answer to specific questions
  • retrieve information for a short oral presentation to the other students
  • become more aware of the cultural aspects of Australia
  • compare his/her own culture with the Australian one

Teacher's note:

this teaching unit can be used in classes with a large number of students. In this case the jigsaw reading procedure can be very useful to involve all the students in the activity. There is an example of application in the section for student's assessment.
