Economy [E1] [I1] [F1] [F2] [S1]
Although India has 15.5 per cent
of the
world 's population, it produces 1.5 % of its wealth, unluckily,
this
wealth is not fairly distributed.
There is
also a big difference between the north and
the south of the country, the north being poorer than the south. Like
other
developing countries, it has rich natural resources but they have not
been
fully exploited and over two thirds of the working population earn a
living
working in the agricultural sector. Beside being the number one
producer
of tea, it also exports rice, sugar cane, oil seeds, wheat and cotton .
The textile industry is the largest industry , which accounts for 26 %
of the
country's exports.
After independence, the Government tried to face the baby- boom by
increasing
the wheat production through a plan known as Green Revolution.
The Green Revolution was followed by the White one, which took place in
1970,
when the National Diary Development Board made effort to create a
nation wide
milk grid. This policy achieved the expected results as India is the
largest
producer of milk and milk products, presenting the world's largest
cattle
population (193 million).
Today, the middle class is growing but there are still 600 million poor
people
who live in city slums and in rural villages and they have no hope on
improving
their living conditions. Indeed, in all the big cities, where taxies
weave
through beggars, trying to avoid the sacred cows, whole families live
under
bridges in cardboard boxes. Many middle class Indians prefer
ignoring these
people's distress and also European tourists, after the initial shock,
get used
to seeing such poverty. From bad to worse, the inhabitants of the slums
are running the
risk
of loosing their "homes" [E1] [I1] because the government's plan to
modernize the city is ordering the demolition of the slums.
