People
India has
the largest
population in the world after China. In 1990, the population in
India was
853 million with an average density of 259 people per square
kilometre, now
the population has grown so quickly that, in 2006, India houses 1.1
billion
people, comprising approximately one-sixth of the world's population
Although the cities [I1] are growing quickly in size and population, India
is still
a land of villages as 75% of the population lives or better "try to
survive" in small villages and slums. Women[E1] [E2] [F1] [I1] and children [E1] [F1] [I1] who
represent the weakest classes suffer from this situation. There are
more than
375 million children in India and, although the government historically
took
and it is still taking steps to guarantee the basic children's
rights,
73% of them still live under the poverty line.
Dramatically enough, juvenile job is a real social evil as children are
more
requested than adults as they are cheaper and less demanding.
Sex discrimination is still
an up to date problem in India and the
adverse sex ratio (975 females in comparison to 1000 males) can be
considered
one of its symptoms.
If little boys live in extreme poverty, girl children, having a lower
social
status, are completely neglected by society and their birth is
considered a
real curse. There is, even, the tendency to abort female faetus.[S1] [S2]. 60% of
girls
are forced to get married and give birth to children before 18 years
old and
malnutrition and the lack of health care took a heavy tall of victims.
Even if literary
rate
is equivalent to 79,9%, a lot of Indian women cannot read or write and
more
than 50% don't take the middle school examination.
In 2002/2003 82% of children from 6 to 14 were enrolled in school and
the
target is to reach the 100% by the end of the century.
The school
system [E1] [E2]is
divided into pre primary school ( lower and higher kindergartens)
primary (from
6 to 11 years old) secondary (from 11 to 15) and higher secondary (from
16 to
17) and then graduation and post graduation.
Religion[E1] [I1] [I2] is very
important in India. Over 80% of the
population are Hindus, but many Muslims and Sikhs live in the North
West. Here,
there are frequent clashes between the different religious
communities.
Hinduism is not only a religion, but also a way of life. It was the
hindu
religion that introduces the system of castes: the Brahims were
the
highest caste, while the people of the lowest caste were called the
Untouchables. The class system still influences life in present day
India.
