SOME SUGGESTIONS FROM A TEACHER TO BE

SOME SUGGESTIONS FROM A TEACHER-TO-BE

  • Not all students are able to respond immediately to the teacher’s prompts and to participate actively to class discussion. Give students the opportunity to write down (on their notebooks) notes and ideas before actually inviting them to contribute to the lesson and to express their point of view. This would give reflective students time to think over their thoughts and active learners opportunities to experience and use new language.
  • When using role plays. Teach reflective students communication strategies (taking time, listening to other people’s comments, mentally preparing what they are going to say, paraphrasing concepts to compensate for words or particular expressions which may have been forgotten) could prove to be an effective strategies aimed at helping them acquire self-confidence.
  • Give the students plenty of opportunities to work with their classmates. Try to form groups in which different cognitive styles are blended and mixed. This will give the students the opportunity to unconsciously experience different strategies and to share strengths and weaknesses.
  • Give intuitive students opportunities to think about how the foreign language works: probably, they will not find summaries and exercises aimed at highlighting linguistic structures particularly desirable, but you are there to help them overcome their limits.
