Women in novels between Victorian Age and Modernism di Daniela Gallizio

Assessment

At the end of this teaching unit the students will have to pass an oral test. Through some questions they will have to show that they are able to analyse the passages dealt with. For example, they will have to describe the two heroines and set them in their literary, historical and social background. They will have to comment on the style used by each writer. Here follow some questions for the oral test:

  1. What does Catherine consider Heathcliff responsible for?
  2. Does Catherine think that Heathcliff will forget her after her death?
  3. What does Catherine want Heathcliff to do?
  4. How does Heathcliff define Catherine’s feelings towards Edgar?
  5. Why can we define Catherine as a typical Victorian girl?
  6. What are Clarissa’s thoughts when she compares Peter with her husband?
  7. Which adjectives would you use to define Clarissa and Peter?
  8. Is Clarissa still in love with Peter?
  9. What kind of narrator is used by Virginia Woolf?
  10. What was the position of women in Great Britain during Modernism?

The students failing this oral test will have the possibility to be tested again through some questions focussing on the two passages.

Here are some of the written questions for the remedial activity:

  1. What happens during the last meeting between Catherine and Heathcliff?
  2. Describe Catherine’s mood and her feelings towards Heathcliff. Why didn’t she marry him?
  3. Focus on the passage from Mrs. Dalloway. How would you define Clarissa’s attitude towards love?
  4. Comment on the narrative technique used by Virginia Woolf.
