LA STORIA DELLA BANDIERA
The national flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is called the Union Jack.
It incorporates the emblems of England, Scotland and Ireland.
It comes from the superimposition of the red cross on a white ground of St. George, the patron saint of England, the white diagonal cross on a blue ground of St. Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, and the red diagonal cross of St. Patrick for Ireland.
The Union Jack was first adopted in 1801.
St.Patrick's cross now represents only Northern Ireland or Ulster.
The Republic of Ireland, once an English possession, became a separate country in 1922.
