Principe de la pile à hydrogène
La pile à hydrogène est une pile à combustible utilisant le dihydrogène et le dioxygène. Il s’agit d’une combustion électrochimique et contrôlée de dihydrogène et de dioxygène, avec production simultanée d’électricité, d’eau et de chaleur, selon la réaction chimique de fonctionnement de la pile :
        2 H2 (g) + O2 (g)  = 2 H2O (l)

Pour mettre en oeuvre cette réaction, on dispose de deux électrodes l’anode et la cathode séparées par un électrolyte (milieu bloquant le passage des électrons mais laissant circuler les ions). Cette réaction est déclenchée en utilisant un catalyseur, en général du platine.

A la cathode, pôle positif de la pile, le comburant mis en jeu est toujours le dioxygène du couple
O2 (g)/ H2O (l), selon la demi-équation électronique : O2 (g) + 4 H+ (aq) + 4 e-   =  2 H2O (l)

A l'anode,  pôle négatif de la pile, le combustible utilisé est le dihydrogène H2 du couple
H+ (aq) / H2 (g), selon la demi-équation électronique :  H2 (g) = 2 H+ (aq) + 2 e-

Le dihydrogène et le dioxygène utilisés peuvent être fabriqués par électrolyse de l'eau. On peut aussi utiliser le dioxygène de l'air.
Lors de l’électrolyse de l’eau les réactions qui se produisent aux électrodes sont inverses de celles de la pile.

Hydrogène: usages et fonctionnement des technologies
Le développement de la filière hydrogène repose en grande partie sur la technologie de la pile à combustible (PAC). Son principe n’est pas nouveau, puisqu’il fut découvert dès 1839 par William R. Grove. À l’époque, cet avocat anglais, chercheur amateur en électrochimie, constate qu’en recombinant de l’hydrogène et de l’oxygène, il est possible de créer simultanément de l’eau, de la chaleur et de l’électricité. La pile à combustible est née. C’est Francis T. Bacon, ingénieur, qui réalisera, en 1953, le premier prototype industriel de puissance notable (de l’ordre du kW).
Mais seule la Nasa exploitera, dans les années 60, cette technologie pour fournir en électricité certains de ses vaisseaux Gemini et Apollo. Car si le principe de la PAC paraît simple, sa mise en œuvre est complexe et coûteuse, ce qui interdisait jusqu’alors sa diffusion dans le grand public. Aujourd’hui, des progrès ont été réalisés et les applications envisageables sont nombreuses. De la microPAC, qui ne produit que les quelques watts nécessaires à l’alimentation d’un téléphone mobile, à la pile capable de produire 1 MW pour fournir de l’électricité à un immeuble collectif, en passant par la pile destinée aux applications embarquées, dans le secteur des transports, il existe désormais toute une gamme de PAC. Le principe de fonctionnement est toujours le même, mais différentes technologies sont en développement.

La voiture à hydrogène passe du prototype à la mini-série
Le premier prototype de voiture à hydrogène, présenté par DaimlerChrysler en 1994, avait permis de prouver la viabilité technologique de la pile à combustible, mais faisait figure de laboratoire ambulant avec ses 800 kg d'équipements embarqués. Les véhicules, que vient de réceptionner le California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP), contrastent avec leurs 5 places passagers et leurs performances proches des citadines à moteur à combustion. Cet organisme a ainsi pris possession, le 2 décembre 2002, de la première voiture à hydrogène livrée par Honda et devrait en recevoir quatre autres du même constructeur dans le courant de l'année 2003. D'après le planning du CaFCP, une soixantaine de véhicules propulsés avec des piles à combustibles seront en service à la fin de l'année, faisant de ce partenariat le plus grand laboratoire d'essai, en conditions réelles, de véhicules non polluants. Ce succès n'est pas un hasard. On compte, en effet, au nombre des partenaires les principaux constructeurs automobiles mondiaux, des géants pétroliers et de nombreuses agences d'état américaines.

Les biocarburants
productions de carburants à partir de végétaux

On peut faire fonctionner des véhicules avec des carburants composés en partie ou en totalité de sous produits de végétaux.

Il existe 2 types de bio-carburants : (cf. schéma)

- les biocarburants huile ( ou biodiesel ): produits à partir d’oléagineux : colza, tournesol…
- les biocarburants alcool : produits à partir de végétaux riches en sucres : betterave, orge, maïs, blé, canne à sucre…qu’on transforme en éthanol.

La France est le premier producteur européen de biocarburants.(près de 50% de la production européenne en 2000).
La raffinerie de Feyzin est l’un des 3 sites en France à produire de l’ETBE (éthyl-tertio-butyl-éther) à partir de l’éthanol (50%) et d’un combustible fossile (50%),. L’ETBE sera ensuite utilisé comme additif à l’essence classique, dans un maximum de 15% (fixé par la Commission Européenne). L’essence additionnée d’ETBE représente environ 4% de l’essence consommée en France.
La filière biodiesel est gérée par 2 industriels des oléagineux, sur 4 sites différents. (aucun sur le Rhône)
