Convention sur la désertification
La désertification a attiré l'attention mondiale pendant la tragique sécheresse sahélienne de 1968-1973. En 1973, on créait le Comité permanent inter-États de lutte contre la sécheresse dans le Sahel (CILSS) en faisant appel aux compétences d'organismes internationaux comme l'Unesco, l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture (FAO) et l'Organisation météorologique mondiale, ainsi que de divers organismes d'aide à vocation multilatérale ou bilatérale. En 1974, l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies décidait d'organiser dès 1977 une conférence sur la désertification. De cette mémorable rencontre devait naître un Plan d'action pour lutter contre la désertification (PALD), mandat du programme antidésertification du PNUE.

FAO Release: Afforestation in the Near East
Planted trees not only help the region to have better quality water but trees serve as windbreaks and shelterbelts against desertification Countries in the Near East currently face an imminent shortage of water and the threat of deforestation as a result of agricultural expansion and urbanization.
Country representatives will share experiences and ideas in Beirut in using forestry to help meet the increasing demand for water in the region and to fight desertification through tree planting.

Pan-African Conference on Water for Food and Ecosystems
A major pan-African conference on water for food and ecosystems was held in Addis Ababa on 4-6 November 2004. The results of the conference will be presented at the International Conference on Water for Food and Ecosystems, which will take place from 31 January to 5 February 2005 in The Hague, which in turn will provide an input to the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-13).FAO Release: African water meeting seeks to harmonize water for food and ecosystems

UN MARKS WORLD DAY TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION
The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is commemorated each year on 17 June. It is part of a UN led international campaign to increase awareness of land degradation. Its theme also highlights the Social Dimensions of Desertification: Migration and Poverty. To commemorate this special anniversary, the secretariat has produced a publication highlighting the unique aspects and work of the Convention since its inception.
One fifth of the world’s population is threatened by the impacts of global desertification. Today, a third of the earth's surface is threatened by desertification, which adds up to an area of over 4 billion hectares of the planet.

WEST AFRICAN ENVIRONMENT MINISTERS PROMOTE BIOSPHERE RESERVES
West Africa’s environment ministers called on the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) to use UNESCO biosphere reserves as laboratories for sustainable development in the region, during a round table held at the Organization’s Headquarters on 26 January.
While compiling an inventory of the reserves’ plants and animals, the project will develop a series of scientific and institutional structures to monitor and manage the environmental impact of human activities (such as agriculture, pastoralism, hunting and fishing). Local communities will also take part in alternative economic initiatives, such as eco-tourism.
